Tree of the Week: January 2nd, 2024
With the dawn of a new year, ArborNote’s Tree of the Week is the English Yew Tree (Taxus baccata). The Yew tree was considered sacred by Druids as it symbolizes the cycle of death and rebirth. They also have quite a long lifespan: between 400-600 years. However, it is impossible to determine the actual age of yew trees using the traditional ring counting method. This is because a fungus rots the inside of their trunks with age until they become hollow! The entire yew tree is poisonous to humans, from the seeds to the needles, with the exception of the aril which is the red flesh of the berry covering the seed!
