Tree of the Week: February 4th, 2025

With Valentine’s Day just around the corner, ArborNote’s Tree of the Week is the Pink Trumpet Tree (Handroanthus impetiginosus). This tree is native to North, Central and South America, from northern Mexico south to northern Argentina. It is also the national tree of Paraguay. This tree is known for its beautiful pink flowers that bloom in the summer in the southern hemisphere, and in the winter in the northern hemisphere! Harvesting wild trees for lumber to make flooring and decking has become a major cause of deforestation in the Amazon. The trees do not grow in concentrated stands but instead are found scattered throughout the forest, logging roads have to be built long distances to locate and harvest the trees. There are currently no protections in place to keep these trees from exhibition in the wild. It is an important plant for pollinators and can be used as a “honey plant” for bee species, meaning bees use the nectar from the plants in order to make honey!
