Tree of the Week: May 7th, 2024
Another amazing tree we saw at the 90th annual @@westernchapterisa conference at the Mission Bay Hyatt in San Diego! This is a Torrey Pine (Pinus torreyana), which is the rarest pine species in North America (some argue the world!) that is only found in coastal San Diego County, and on Santa Rosa Island, offshore from Santa Barbara. They are critically endangered because of their small population area, although they are thought to be a relict population, meaning it is believed they used to have a larger natural population that has since dwindled. These trees are reliant on the coastal fog to supplement the low rainfall, which is why they only grow naturally along the coast of California!
