Our fearless leader, Hank Ortiz, has been searching all of Southern California for a Tangelo citrus tree (Citrus × tangelo) due to the citrus quarantine, but yesterday one was finally found! A Tangelo is a cross between a tangerine and a grapefruit/pomelo. It’s known for producing large, juicy, sweet-tart, and easy-to-peel fruits and for their signature “neck” or bell-shaped appearance. These trees grow 8-12 feet high, possess glossy foliage and fragrant white flowers that start to bloom in late winter/ early spring. In 1898, Dr. Walter T. Swingle at Eustis and Dr. Herbert J. Webber was the first to produce the crosses that resulted in the tangelo fruit at UC Riverside in California! Because they are so different from other citrus fruits, they were put in a class by themselves!
