Tree of the Week: March 3, 2026

ArborNote’s Tree of the Week is the Shadblow Serviceberry (Amelanchier canadensis). This tree is native to eastern North America in Canada from Newfoundland west to southern Ontario, and in the United States from Maine south to Alabama. It is largely restricted to wet sites, particularly on the Atlantic coastal plain, growing at altitudes from sea level up to 650 ft. It blooms with delicate white flowers in the early spring and its sweet, edible fruit is ready in July. The fruits are a food source for many different species of birds and small mammals including cardinals, woodpeckers, robins, orioles, chipmunks, and squirrels. The bark is smooth and ash gray when it is younger but as it gets older, the bark begins to form long, dark ridges and shallow furrows as it grows older. It is used as a medicinal plant, food, and as an ornamental plant. It is also sometimes made into bonsai!
