Tree of the Week: March 24, 2026

ArborNote’s Tree of the Week is the Evergreen Pear (Pyrus kawakamii). These trees have been blooming like crazy around our office in Irvine, CA! This tree is native to Taiwan and China, but is a popular non-native tree in California and warm western climates, but it is not generally considered a widely naturalized or invasive species. It is a fast-growing ornamental tree reaching 15–30 feet in height and width, known for its early spring profusion of white, fragrant blossoms.  Despite the name “Evergreen Pear,” it can drop its leaves and become deciduous for a short period during winter. It produces small, inedible, bronze-green or brown, pea-sized pome fruits in late summer. While not edible for humans, these small, hard fruits are popular with birds!
