Tree of the Week: March 18th, 2025

With Spring just around the corner, ArborNote’s Tree of the Week is the White fringetree (Chionanthus virginicus). The tree native to the savannas and lowlands of the northeastern and southeastern United States and is a part of the olive family. It is affectionately referred to as the “old man’s beard” tree because of the unique white flowers that look like fringe or a beard. The flowers are known for their sweet, lilac-like smell. Fringe Trees have been used in landscaping since America’s early days—it is said George Washington planted them at Mount Vernon. The dried roots and bark were  also used by Native Americans to treat skin inflammations. In the late summer, if you plant two Fringe Trees (one male and one female) the flowers turn into tiny plum-like fruits. 75 different species of birds eat Fringe Tree fruit, so if you are thinking of planting one, just know that it will be a favorite of your local birds!
