Tree of the Week: June 25th, 2024
With the heat hitting Southern California this week, ArborNote’s Tree of the Week is the White Mulberry (Morus alba). Our fearless leader, Hank Ortiz, grew up in Redlands, CA and had 3 large Mulberry trees in his backyard that shaded him all summer. Whenever it gets hot, it brings him back to sitting under the branches of a beautiful Mulberry tree! The white mulberry is widely cultivated to feed the silkworms employed in the commercial production of silk. It also has the unique ability to have a “pollen explosion” in which the tree launches its pollen at a rate greater than half the speed of sound. That makes it the fastest known movement in the plant kingdom!
