Tree of the Week: June 18th, 2024
Our Tree of the Week is the Himalayan cedar (Cedrus deodara). It is a species of cedar native to the Himalayas that can reach 164 feet in height. It grows best at altitudes of 5,000–10,000 ft. It is widely grown as an ornamental tree, often planted in parks and large gardens for its drooping foliage. Deodar is in great demand as a building material because of its durability and rot-resistant character. Its rot-resistant character makes it the ideal wood for constructing the well-known houseboats of Srinagar, Kashmir. Interestingly, insects avoid this tree, so the essential oil is used as insect repellent on the feet of horses, cattle and camels. Due to its antifungal and insect repellent properties, rooms made of deodar cedar wood are used to store meat and food grains in countries like Pakistan!
