Tree of the Week: July 9th, 2024

With summer in full swing, ArborNote’s Tree of the Week is the Bailey’s Copernicia Palm (Copernicia baileyana). This fan palm is endemic, which means they are only found naturally in eastern and central Cuba. It has a single gray trunk about 25 inches in diameter that is topped with a large crown of fan-shaped fronds. For the most part, it grows upwards but as new leaves emerge old leaves fold over to create a unique amazing fountain look. The leaf surface above is green while the surface below is waxy gray-green. The leaves are used in Cuba to make multiple items, from hats to baskets, and are also commonly used in thatched roofs!
