Tree of the Week: July 16th, 2024
To honor Argentina for winning the Copa America soccer tournament yesterday for the 16th time and the second time in a row, ArborNote’s Tree of the Week is Cockspur Coral (Erythrina crista-galli). This tree is the national tree of Argentina, and is distributed throughout northeastern and central western Argentina, eastern Bolivia, southern Brazil, much of Paraguay, and almost all of Uruguay. It is a symbol of bravery in Argentina, and is often referred to in music, art, and folklore. It has buoyant seeds that easily traverse waterways, allowing this tree to become widespread. Its most notable feature is the bright red flowers, which bloom from October to April in their native South America and from April to October in the northern hemisphere. The leaves and bark produce antimalarial compounds and have long been used as a traditional medicine for malaria.
