Tree of the Week: January 9th, 2024
ArborNote’s Tree of the Week is the Lacebark Pine (Pinus bungeana). This pine is native to northeastern and central China and is frost hardy down to below −15 °F! They are often planted by temples and cemeteries in both China and Korea. With bark that exfoliates in the winter in large puzzle-shaped pieces, with shades ranging from crimson, silver, green, and peach. The tree does this yearly exfoliation to strip away the older crimson bark that has been protecting the inner tree from the outer environment, to reveal the underlying greener (photosynthetic) younger bark, ready to do a year of duty!
