Tree of the Week: January 21, 2025

It’s a special Tree of the Week as we have collaborated with Greensky Arborists owner Richard Hawe from Austin Texas! His selection for Tree of the Week is the Chinese Pistache (Pistacia chinensis). It is one of Richard’s favorite trees because of the amazing fall colors. The Chinese Pistache tree is native to Afghanistan, China, Taiwan, and the Philippines but has been planted across the world because of its beautiful fiery leaves in the fall. It has also been described as tough as nails, drought tolerant, and easy to transplant, making it a perfect ornamental tree. The male and female flowers emerge in the spring before the leaves. They are dense or loose greenish clusters. The female flower, once pollinated, produces a red drupe that ripens to blue in October and is enjoyed by birds. The tree also produces an edible oil that has been found to be useful for biodiesel production. This oil, once extracted from the seeds and fruits of the tree, can be combined with ethyl acetate to form a biodiesel! If you would like to do your own Tree of the Week, DM us!
