Tree of the Week: February 27th, 2024

ArborNote’s Tree of the Week is the Ginkgo Tree (Ginkgo biloba). The Ginkgo tree is the last living species in the order Ginkgoales, which first appeared over 290 million years ago when dinosaurs walked the Earth! It is often referred to as a “living fossil” as it has remained relatively unchanged and has no living relatives. It is found along streets everywhere from Seoul to New York and known for its elegant fan shaped leaves that turn a golden color in the fall. Living that long means that they have to be tough. They can withstand air pollution, salt, snow, wind, hail, drought, heat, insects and disease, mismanagement, and even radiation!
