Tree of the Week: February 25, 2025

ArborNote’s Tree of the Week was picked by our fearless leader, Hank Ortiz, because he just planted this tree in his yard over the weekend! The Tree of the Week is the Atomic Red Nectar Tree (Prunus persica var. nectarina ‘Atomic Red’). After Hank spent the day at the Stein family farm with the Professional Tree Care Association pruning fruit trees, he decided he wanted to plant some in his yard. Nectarines are hard to grow in Southern California because it doesn’t get very cold here and it isn’t the ideal climate. However, the head arborist of Stein Family farm recommended the Atomic Red Nectar because, with the right care, these trees can thrive in Southern California. They have incredibly beautiful red flowers that bloom in the Spring, which gives the tree its common name. It will then produce nectarines in mid June after it matures. Hank will be keeping us updated on this new tree as the year goes on!
