Tree of the Week: February 20th, 2024
Celebrating President’s Day this week, ArborNote’s Tree of the Week is the Tulip Tree (liriodendron tulipifera). This tree gets its common name from the yellow tulip-like flowers that grow on its branches in Spring. It also displays beautiful red and orange leaves in the fall. The Tulip tree is the tallest of North American hardwoods, growing to 100 feet or more and used in making furniture, cabinetry, and musical instruments! Native to North America, the Tulip Poplar Tree is so captivating year-round that George Washington had two planted in his front yard at Mount Vernon in 1785 as Mount Vernon’s official Bicentennial Tree. They are both still alive and they draw a crowd to this day!
