Tree of the Week: August 6th, 2024
ArborNote’s Tree of the Week is the European Hornbeam (Carpinus betulus). Our business administrator, Chloe, spent last week in the UK and spent some time at an estate with lots of these beautiful trees. It’s beautiful, useful, and its year-round leaf cover makes it a winter haven for wildlife. These trees are also long-lasting, with a lifespan of around 300 years. Its wood is extremely hard; in fact it has the hardest wood of any tree in Europe, and was used to make ox yokes (the beams that allow ox to pull a cart) and chariots. The hornbeam is so named due to the hardness of its timber – ‘horn’ means ‘hard’ and ‘beam’ was the name for a tree in old English!
