Tree of the Week: August 27th, 2024
We have been loving the palms over here so ArborNote’s Tree of the Week is the Mexican Fan Palm (Washingtonia robusta) which is also known as the “skyduster” tree because it looks like it’s dusting the sky! It’s native to the Baja peninsula and northwest Mexico, but it has been naturalized in many places across the world, from Florida, to Arizona, to Egypt. They are tall trees, with the largest reaching 98 feet and are very hardy. They can live for hundreds of years, with some documented cases of palms living up to 500 years. In fact, many of the iconic “Hollywood” palms in Los Angeles that you see today were planted to beautify LA for the Olympics in 1932!
