Tree of the Week: August 19, 2025

While we were doing an inventory of our office building this week, we found a California Sunset Pomegranate (Punica granatum ‘California Sunset’) tree that none of us knew was there, so that is our Tree of the Week! Although this species does not create edible fruit, it does bloom with beautiful coral/red flowers with white streaks from the beginning of Spring until the end of Summer. It grows naturally as a multi-limbed small scrub, but if correctly cultivated and pruned, it can grow as a single trunked tree. It originated in France in the 1800s as ‘Madame Legrelle’, a name still recognized in European horticultural circles. The plant was later popularized in the United States, particularly in California, where its dazzling flowers and heat tolerance earned it a place in many Mediterranean-style gardens. Renamed ‘California Sunset’ for American nurseries, it remains a beloved ornamental choice for gardeners seeking color and charm without the mess of fruit!’
