Tree of the Week: April 30th, 2024
We are attending the 90th annual @westernchapterisa Conference at the @hyattmissionbay in San Diego and we saw this amazing Chinese banyan (Ficus microcarpa)! It is native in a range from China through tropical Asia and the Caroline Islands to Australia. It is widely planted as a shade tree in hotter and more humid climates because of its dense foliage. In Southern California, a population of the symbiotic fig wasp is now established, which allows the trees to produce fruit, which allows them to spread their seeds. This has allowed naturalized populations to be found in Los Angeles, Orange, Riverside, San Diego, and Ventura counties, including on buildings, bridges, and other structures, and as an epiphyte on other trees, especially palm trees!
